High Impact Practices (HIPs) hold the promise of increasing student achievement, engagement, satisfaction and persistence. The research presented here uses a framework from Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to assess the self-efficacy of students in an Introduction to Sociology course developed around a number of HIPs. Using digital assessment tools (including a pre-post survey and Comprehensive Learner Record) along with an SCT analysis of data, the researchers hope to demonstrate meaningful gains in 1) students’ abilities to “Think Like A Sociologist” and 2) students’ own self-efficacy related to academic and non-academic pursuits. Participants in this session will learn how to implement and assess HIPs in their own courses, programs and departments.

Using Design Thinking to Explore "Wicked Problems" and Build Momentum in Student Learning Discussions
During the first year of implementation of a new assessment system, Messiah College collected meaningful program assessment data linked to both program and institutional outcomes for an amazing 99% percent of our general education classes. We share how we approached assessment’s “wicked problems” using Design Thinking. This approach focuses on the user experience to find creative solutions through integrative thinking, along with experimentation to build momentum and engagement (Brown, 2008). The result is continual gains towards shifting mindsets and better quality data on student learning. We share how our momentum expanded into the co-curricular area, where we plan to integrate the Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR) to equip students to control how they convey their learning to broader audiences beyond the campus community.
